Chorus History
The Springfield, Missouri chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America was founded in 1949. Today it is the cornerstone of barbershop singing in southwest Missouri. Springfield is home of the Four Pitchikers, the 1956 Central States District Champions and 1959 International Champions. Members were Larry Hedgpeth, Tenor; Keith Keltner, Lead; Keith Young, Baritone; Joe Delzell, Bass.
The Springfield chapter was the home of the first chorus to represent the Central States District in International Competition in Washington, D.C. in 1954. Today the chapter is still going strong. The chorus competes in the Central States District in the AA Plateau. Members range in age from teens to octogenarians. The chapter is also home to several active quartets, including The Noise Boys and The Elder Statesmen.
